Past Lives . Top Story - October 2024.
I watched this movie on the plane from Rome to New York almost a year ago. I started writing this story by getting the image, putting in the title and the first sentence. However, I never got around to actually writing it up until this week when in my Intercultural Communication course I used the movie clip as an illustration of non-verbal communication in different cultures. The memories and feelings of the movie flooded and urged me to return to this review. So I will try to point out some of the ways the movie affected me at the four distinct levels from the media literacy perspective:

The Apprentice
I've watched the movie Donald Trump wouldn't care if I watched or not. As I am what he would label as "lib'ral," he'd never care about my opinion. However, I've watched the movie he wouldn't want his fan base to watch and for that reason he, the self-proclaimed defender of free speech, issued a cease-and-desist order against the movie producers and distributors and did everything possible in his power to make sure it was not released in the United States. His lawyers even wrote in the C&D letter that showing it now would constitute election interference.

F*ck Cancer!
I'm driving to my favorite berry farm on a rural road in Ohio, completely absorbed in a story from the NPR's Moth Radio Hour that was devoted to fears. A woman in the story shares her fear of getting pregnant at 47 years of age as a result of occasional sex with her husband. She is telling the story with grace and humor, first describing her complete shock at the home pregnancy test results and then - a confirmation visit to her OBGYN.

Language, Brain and Behavior
I'm sitting in a class on Brain and Behavior at my college between two of my own courses I teach on MWF. It's tiring but fascinating. As a doctoral student in 2005, I took a course in Perception and Sensation that covered a lot of brain functions relating to speech and language, but a lot has been discovered since then due to various imaging technologies used to study the brain. So I'm basically catching up.

Shake Them Off!
There's 8.5 billion of them now. Just a mere second ago (a century by their measure) there was 2 billion of them, and now it's 8.5. Some of their brightest minds think they will peak out at 10 billion and start decreasing in numbers. I know better.
