Petals and Grain
Gathering the Moments That Make Us Whole
From fertile fields, the golden grain we glean,
A harvest rich, a bounty to convene.
Each stalk a story, nurtured by the sun,
A season's toil, now beautifully done.
The barns grow full, a promise for the year,
Against the cold, dispelling every fear.
But gathering is more than earth's embrace,
It's silent moments, caught in time and space.
A gentle word, a laughter light and free,
Stored in the heart, for memory's decree.
Like scattered petals, gathered with such care,
Fragrant reminders, floating in the air.
Old photographs, their edges soft with age,
A tapestry of lives on life's wide stage.
Each face a story, every smile a light,
Held close and cherished, banishing the night.
For in this act, of drawing close and tight,
We build our essence, shining ever bright.
From fragments small, a greater whole we weave,
The things we gather, truly we believe.

I'm thirty-one and orbiting the same few mistakes like they're landmarks. London is already awake before I am (or before I've slept) - sirens somewhere far enough to ignore, buses sighing at stops, people moving with purpose I can't quite borrow. I lie there for a bit, tasting last night at the back of my throat, trying to remember if I meant to drink that much or if it just...happened again.
