His heart finally stopped racing but a headache was nagging him near his right temple. Ryan stopped sobbing as the paramedics quickly arrived to help him out of his mangled convertible. Even though the car had to be towed, he felt okay and declined a ride to an area hospital.

Tree Spirit
The Ho-Chunk, or Hočągara, were a Siouan-speaking Native American people who considered all trees to be shrines. Animist druids also recognized the spirit of all things. Many cultures believed that spirits and ghosts used trees as a temporary dwelling while on Earth.

An Attachment
The deadline was looming and the cell phone displayed 2:00am. The final budget analysis had to be completed within the next six hours or additional project funding couldn't be extended until the following quarter. The elderly couple loved their visits as well. In the height of the Great Depression, it was a blessing to have a cow that gave more than enough milk for a small family and it was a blessing to the old couple on the hill to have a neighbor that owned such a cow.

Switch
Over the way, in the giant concrete block of flats that make up Bailey Court, there is a little light that comes on at 1.15am, every single morning. It looks like a little candle, standing in the window, and the flame burns brightly in the darkness of the night. I see it as I get myself a drink of whiskey with ice, the same as every night.

Footprints in the Snow
It was a cold winter afternoon early in the last century. A mother huddled in her cabin on the west fork of the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee. She held two of her children in a tight embrace … but one was missing. Her two-year-old son had wandered away from the cabin earlier that day. Since then, the temperature had been falling steadily, along with a heavy snow.
