Pickle Ball Petition Seeks Replacement of Outdated Surface
A few years ago when Teresa Chang started to play the game of pickle ball in Somers, she said, the tennis courts at Reis Park weren’t getting a lot of use from residents. Even so, people started to notice a small group playing this mix of tennis, ping pong and badminton, and now there are about 300 players in the town. Unfortunately, there are issues with the current surface, and in an effort for an upgrade, Chang has put the ball in the town’s center court.

Mahopac Grad Stays Involved as Flag Football Referee and Player
Caitlin Schweigler played basketball and softball at Mahopac High School, and passing into adulthood, she never lost her love for sports. Her most recent affinity is Flag Football, and last March, she began playing in Westchester Female Flag Football. Her team made it to the finals but she didn’t make it to the finish line when her ACL was torn. Of course, being sidelined didn’t put out her competitive fire. “I still wanted to be involved,” said Schweigler, and like any good athlete, she found a way.

Chroma Art Exhibit Will Take You Inside the Worlds of Edward Giobbi
Conlangs On Saturday June 24, the Chroma Fine Art Gallery hosted the opening of their month long exhibit for Katonah's own Edward Giobbi. Ninety Seven years old, the artist’s long resume was succinctly put into words by his local picture framer. “He’s a flat out treasure in the art world,” said Tim Delaney of the Katonah Art & Frame Shop, and the global designation definitely applies.

Violent Mind Meld in Star Trek VI was Consistent with the Long Character Evolution of Spock
Photo by Gage Skidmore Star Trek VI doesn’t quite do it for me. But like Star Trek V, it does have some very good ideas and a bunch of amazing scenes. "Only Nixon could go to China" and Bones chiding Kirk over kissing Iman are priceless, while the dinner scene is one of the most profound in the history of the franchise. Otherwise, I have two that complete Spock’s long confusing journey, and despite their unpopularity, they put the finishing touches on the human adventure that began in 1966.

Asteroid City Lacks Substance and Provides a Hollow Impact
I liked Rushmore and absolutely love The Royal Tenenbaums. As a result, a Wes Anderson film would have my attention, and in all likelihood, my money. In for a pound, I probably gave the Grand Budapest Hotel a thumbs up, but I have no real memory of the story or the characters. The same goes for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and apparently, I’ve become less likely to hand over the green. Missing the last few installments, it’s hard to forget that the soundtrack to Zissou consists entirely of David Bowie music, covered in Portuguese. How do you dismiss such a wonderful oddity, and I decided it was time again. I reached back and found that Asteroid City has all the same components that originally drew me in. There is one glaring omission, though.

16-2 Victory over Goshen Sends John Jay to the Final Four

John Jay Falls 7-4 in Section One Final

In their way stood Rye, and a showdown at Yorktown High School on Tuesday, May 30 was there to settle matters. But despite not losing since a 10-4 loss to the Garnets ten games ago, the Wolves fell behind and were left chasing in defeat.

John Jay Reaches Regional Finals with Victories over Rye and Schuylerville
Click image for Rye Photos After defeating Somers pretty handily last Tuesday, John Jay arrived in Nyack on Friday May 26 for the Section One finals, and the game began on script. JoJo Degl got the ball up in the air, Mia Puccio chased it down and Degl was soon on a b-line for the goal. Unfortunately, the middie shot high, and before anyone could really gather the anomaly, third seeded Rye had a 3-0 lead. So Annabelle Brennan put the early outburst in perspective, and the blueprint was laid out for the Wolves fifth straight Sectional Championship.

John Jay Falls 7-0 in Section One Final
Click Photo for more images Nonetheless, John Jay came off the victory over Fox Lane on Wednesday May 24 and loudly welcomed the ballpark to the game on Friday Night. The chatter going strong as they awaited the first pitch, the bench erupted on Nick Fassert’s bloop single to center and went fever pitch when Jackson DiLorenzo hit Scott Esposito. Unfortunately, Andrew Lombardi and Nick Russo struck out to end the threat and Mitch Hammer entered with some unfinished business.

John Jay Ready for Rye Rematch in Section One Final
Click for Hen Hud Photos Earlier in the season, John Jay traveled to Rye and lost 10-4 to the section one perennial powerhouse. So the postseason always on the horizon, the Wolves haven’t forgotten and the entire pack has been wagging for a rematch “We’ve been looking forward to it all season,” said Andrew Kiefer. Even so, fifth seeded Hen Hud stood in the way, but the May 25 semifinal match up at Contest Field didn’t have the home crowd doubting for very long.

John Jay Headed to Section Finals Again
Click for Somers Photos After manhandling Nanuet on Saturday May 19, the field hockey team got down to business on Tuesday in the semifinals. “Somers has always been a rivalry,” said Shannon Nolan. “I think everyone on their team and our team knows that. So we wanted to compete like we always do.” No doubt they did but the rivalry again proved one sided.
