In the Quiet Between Heartbeats

A love that didn’t need words to exist

By Zuhaib khan Published a day ago 2 min read

I found you

not in the loud, unforgettable moments

people write stories about—

but in the quiet.

The kind of quiet

that settles gently between two souls,

where words feel unnecessary

and silence somehow says everything.

You didn’t arrive like a storm.

There was no chaos,

no sudden rush that took my breath away.

Instead, you came like soft light

through a half-open window—

unannounced, unnoticed at first…

but impossible to ignore once I felt you there.

It was strange, really.

How someone could feel so familiar

without ever belonging to my past.

How your presence

felt less like something new

and more like something

my heart had been waiting to remember.

You spoke in pauses,

in glances that lingered just a second too long,

in moments where nothing was said

but everything was understood.

And I listened.

Not just with my ears—

but with the parts of me

I didn’t even know existed before you.

We were never loud.

Never the kind of love

that demands attention or fills rooms with laughter.

We were quieter than that.

Softer.

The kind of love

that exists in the spaces between words,

in the way time slows down

when two people simply sit… together.

And maybe that’s why it meant so much.

Because in a world that celebrates noise,

we found something rare—

something real.

I remember the way

the smallest moments felt infinite with you.

How a simple walk

felt like a journey worth remembering.

How your laughter didn’t echo in the air—

it stayed.

It settled somewhere deep inside me,

in a place I never knew how to reach on my own.

There were no promises.

No “forever” spoken out loud.

No guarantees that this would last.

Just fleeting moments—

fragile, temporary,

and yet somehow… eternal.

And maybe that’s what made it beautiful.

Not the certainty of staying,

but the courage to feel

without knowing how it would end.

Because somehow,

without warning,

we slipped into something that mattered.

Something that changed the way I saw the world.

The way I felt time.

The way I understood love.

And then,

just as quietly as you came—

you left.

No storm.

No breaking.

Just a slow fading,

like the last light of evening

disappearing into night.

I told myself I would forget.

That time would take you away

the way it takes everything else.

But it didn’t.

It never does.

Because even now,

I find you in the smallest things.

In the silence that lingers too long,

in the way the wind hesitates

before it moves again.

In moments that feel incomplete—

as if they’re still waiting for you

to return and finish them.

You were never mine

in the way the world defines belonging.

I couldn’t hold you.

I couldn’t keep you.

But somehow,

you became a part of me anyway.

Not loudly.

Not visibly.

But permanently.

And I think that’s the truth about love

no one ever really talks about.

It isn’t always about staying.

It isn’t always about forever.

Sometimes,

it’s about the way someone changes you—

so deeply

that even after they’re gone…

they’re still there.

So maybe we weren’t meant to last.

Maybe we were never meant to stay.

But if love is measured

by how deeply it lives on

after everything else fades…

Then I know this much is true—

In the quiet between heartbeats,

in the space where memories refuse to disappear…

We were infinite.
