Sign of the Times was the Perfect Song Choice For Project Hail Mary
A Film Changing Improvised Moment

Project Hail Mary made its debut in theaters on March 20th, 2026 and has been leaving audiences stunned by its dazzling visuals, emotional storytelling, and scientific accuracy.
Based on the novel by Andy Weir, the story is about Earth nearing extinction as the sun begins to die. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a middle-school teacher who has a PhD, is recruited by the formidable Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller), eventually becoming the world's leading expert on the phenomenon threatening the sun and all the stars in the solar system.
Spoilers ahead.
A few days before launch, the crew holds a gathering that serves as the final hurrah. The mission is a one-way trip for the astronauts, so the scene acts as a vital moment of solidarity before leaving Earth for good.
At the hangout, there is karaoke. Eva Stratt unexpectedly goes up to the mic and sings Sign of the Times by Harry Styles, which was moving for both the characters and the audience, as she had been a cold presence thus far.
This moment wasn't originally in the script and the song wasn't part of the original plan. According to Entertainment Weekly, Gosling overheard Hüllersinging from down the hallway and insisted that she sing for the movie.
After contemplation, Hüller comes to the karaoke scene with this song picked and insisted that it was either that song or nothing because she knew it was perfect for the movie.
Just stop your crying , It's a sign of the times , Welcome to the final show , Hope you're wearing your best clothes , You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky
These lyrics perfectly articulate the emotional impact of this scene, especially as it came from a stoic character who hadn't expressed much humility. These lyrics convey her emotions toward the people, rather than the logic for the mission.
Here is my personal interpretation of the lyrics, specifically in the context of the film.
"Just stop your crying, it's a sign of the times" - Although this is terrifying, we have to accept the change and challenges that lay ahead of us.
"Welcome to the final show , Hope you're wearing your best clothes. You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky " - This is it, it's time to get started, and the inevitable cannot be prevented. What lays ahead must be handled with courage, dignitity, and confidence. Or, a literal interpretation, "You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky " could also refer to the tough physical journey that the space travel will entail.
They told me that the end is near , We gotta get away from here , Just stop your crying , Have the time of your life , Breaking through the atmosphere , And things are pretty good from here , Remember everything will be alright ,
"They told me that the end is near , We gotta get away from here ," - The Earth is dying, and we need to do everything we can to prevent that from happening.
"Breaking through the atmosphere , And things are pretty good from here ," - One of the biggest and scariest steps of space travel is breaking through Earth's atmosphere. These lyrics match perfectly.
"Remember everything will be alright ," - If this fails, at least we knew we did everything that we could.
We can meet again somewhere , Somewhere far away from here , We never learn, we been here before
"We can meet again somewhere , Somewhere far away from here ," - Although Eva Stratt wouldn't have this context during the song, one could argue that this could go hand in hand with Grace and Rocky's relationship. It could refer to a somber goodbye said between the friends, as "we'll meet again" is a common saying during final goodbyes.
"We never learn, we been here before" - even if the Earth survives from this particular issue, human behavior continues to contribute to Earth's destruction.
I could go on, but it's no doubt that this song choice was incredibly well picked for this film and it is surpising that it wasn't part of the original plan. What started as a chance hallway encounter became the human element needed for Stratt's character, as well as the anthem for this story. Even when the "final show" is impending, there is still room for humility, bravery, and a little bit of karaoke.
